Lady Eagles Fall in Season-Opening Doubleheader

DALLAS, Tex. (8/17/24) – The Williams Baptist University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in the Paul Quinn Quad-Match to open its season in Dallas, Tex. on Saturday with a 25-11, 25-19, and 25-17 loss to Paul Quinn and a 25-20, 25-18, and 25-15 loss to University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.

Meadow Jones, Tinleigh Ruhman, and Jayla Weddington all tied for the team-lead in kills with four against Paul Quinn.  Jaycie Cook led the way with 10 assists, and Riley Henson led the Eagles with 12 digs in the match.

Paul Quinn began the first set with a 10-3 run and never looked back to take the set win.  

The Lady Eagles came out hot in the second set, taking a 6-3 lead.  Paul Quinn responded with a 9-1 run to take an 18-10 lead.  Williams fought back to bring the score to 23-19, but PQC was able to finish out the set to take a 2-0 set lead.

The Lady Eagles held close in the third set with a Tinleigh Ruhman kill that brought the score to 21-17 in favor of Paul Quinn, but PQC finished the stanza on a 4-0 run to take the match in straight sets.

Natalie Collier led WBU in kills in the second match of the day with four.  Jaycie Cook led in kills once again with seven, and Faith Raymond led in digs with nine.  

The Lady Eagles opened the first set against Science and Arts with a 9-3 lead.  The Lady Eagles gave up the lead later in the set after a 6-1 Drover run brought the score to 22-19.  USAO finished off the first set with a score of 25-20.

In the second set, WBU responded after a quick USAO lead with an 8-1 run that cut the Drover lead to one point, but USAO used a run of its own to win the second set 25-18.

USAO finished off the third set with a 7-1 run to claim a 25-15 set win and a straight set victory to end the Lady Eagles day in Dallas.

Williams Baptist will be back in action in the home opener against Rust (MS) on Tuesday, August 20 at 6 p.m from the Southerland-Mabee Center.
