Eagles Drop Opening Day Doubleheader to Valor

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (2/1/24) - The Williams Baptist University baseball team lost it's opening day doubleheader to Evangel by scores of 8-5 and 5-4.

The Eagles scored first in game one after Tyrell Burnett scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first, but Evangel would tie it back up in the bottom of the inning when Riley Mitchell scored on a passed ball.

The Valor took a 4-1 lead in the ballgame after an RBI double from Eli Cook and a two-run homer from Levi Loughridge.

WBU conceded four more runs over the next three innings and went into the seventh down 8-1.

The bats woke up for the Eagles in the seventh when Tyrell Burnett crushed a two-run shot over the left field fence, and Nick Jones laced a double into the right-center gap for two more RBI's. The rally would end there however, and the final score would stand at 8-5 in favor of Evangel.

The Eagles kept the bats hot in the beginning of game two, chalking three runs on the board in the first inning, and a fourth in the second to take a 4-1 lead.

The bats went quiet for WBU after the second inning, only tallying one more hit after the third inning. Evangel stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take game two and sweep the doubleheader.

The Eagles pick back up tomorrow for the second half of the four game set against Evangel, with first pitch at noon.
