WBU Sweeps Doubleheader With Evangel To Secure Series Split

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (2/2/24) - The Williams Baptist University baseball team swept a doubleheader with Evangel University by the final scores of 5-3 and 7-3.

The Eagles got out to a quick lead in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first thanks to an Evangel error that plated JD Burton, and a bases loaded bean ball on Tate Isaacs that allowed Gavin Mink to score.

Luis Febres added to the Eagles lead in the top of the third with a sac fly to right field that drove in Nick Jones.

Starting pitcher Brevin Carlisle held it down on the mound, allowing only two hits through three innings of work.

Evangel got on the board in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a 2-RBI double, but the Eagles responded with a Skylar Morrison 2-RBI double to take a 5-2 lead.

Evangel scored once more in the bottom of the sixth, but Jacob Eubanks converted the save opportunity to give WBU its first win of the 2024 campaign by the score of 5-3.

In game two, the Valor got out to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.  Noah Burns took over on the mound in the first, worked his way out of a jam, and threw two more scoreless innings after that.

The Eagles got on the board in the top of the fourth with a Seth Jones double that drove in Mason Andrews. Skylar Morrison would drive in another run with a sac fly to right field, and Luis Febres would drive Jones in with a groundout to take a 3-2 lead.

Evangel tied the game again in the bottom of the fourth with a sac fly, but Gavin Mink was awarded home plate on a balk in the top of the fifth to give WBU a 4-3 lead.

WBU scored three more runs in the top of the sixth, and Jolby Jones shut the Valor down on the mound, allowing only two hits over 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. The Eagles took game two by the score of 7-3.

The Eagles will pick back up in the home opener on Friday, February 9 at Shell Field against Southwestern College.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
