Clutch Hitting Powers Eagles to Doubleheader Sweep of Southwestern

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/9/24) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Southwestern College by the scores of 5-3 and 7-5.

Game two was tied 2-2 going into the seventh inning.  Southwestern found its groove on offense, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.

Skylar Morrison led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to spark the offense.  Tate Isaacs followed with an infield single that moved Morrison to third.  Ethan Mannion followed that with a sac fly to cut Southwestern's lead to two.

Two wild pitches scored pinch runner Josh Bennett to cut the lead to one, and Gavin Mink came through with an RBI single to score Ryan Collins to tie the game.

Down to the last out, Jacob Watkins stepped up to the plate and blasted a game-winning two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Eagles the second win of the day.

Noah Willingham gave the Eagles everything he had on the mound in game two, throwing six innings giving up only one earned run, while striking out nine Southwestern hitters.

Southwestern struck first in game one with three runs in the first inning, powered by the momentum of a solo shot off the second pitch of the game.  The Eagles answered quickly with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to an RBI double from Lawson Aaron and a two-run shot over the left field fence from Alex Orman.

Williams took the lead on a Skylar Morrison RBI double in the bottom of the third, and Gavin Mink provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Starting pitcher Jake Algee bounced back after letting up three runs in the first, holding the Moundbuilders scoreless over the next 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.  Jolby Jones got the call out of the pen for his second save of the year, throwing 2.1 perfect innings, striking out two.

Game two was WBU's fourth win in a row, moving the team to 4-2 overall.  Williams will finish out the four game series against Southwestern tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 10, with first pitch tabbed for 10:30 AM at Shell Field.
