Eagles Sweep Southwestern for Sixth Straight Win

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/10/24) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team won its sixth straight game in a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern College by the final scores of 3-2 and 8-4.

Southwestern struck first in game one in the top of the third with a Carlos Camacho 2-RBI double to right center.  The Eagles answered in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Luis Febres and a Gavin Mink RBI single to left to tie the game back at 2-2.

Williams pitching shut down Southwestern the rest of the game.  Parker Jeffries turned in six innings of two run ball while only giving up two runs on two hits, and striking out nine hitters.  Jolby Jones, Noah Burns, and Cooper Thomas all combined for three no-hit innings in relief.

After being shut out since the third inning, the Southwestern offense looked ready to strike in the top of the ninth inning.  Cooper Thomas came into the game in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded and only one out.  Thomas proceeded to strike out the next batter, and induce a ground out to second base to keep the score tied and strand all three runners.

The Eagles' offense continued the momentum from the top of the inning with Seth Jones reaching first and taking second on a throwing error.  Cody Jones followed with an infield hit to move the winning run to third.  Luis Febres was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.

With the table set, Gavin Mink shot a single into left field to score the game-winning run, and clinch the Eagles second walk-off victory in as many games.

In game two, the Eagles stayed hot on offense, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of a 2-RBI knock from Tate Isaacs. Cody Jones added another with a groundout in the bottom of the third, and Jacob Watkins added two more with a single in the fifth.

Southwestern came back, however, scoring four runs on a single and a three-run homer to bring the game within one.

WBU answered back in the bottom of the inning with Zane Rainwater scoring from third on a wild pitch and a Gavin Mink 2-RBI single to right to take an 8-4 lead that would hold true the rest of the game.

Brevin Carlisle picked up his second win of the season with five innings of 1-hit work, striking out six along the way.  Jacob Eubanks notched his second save of the year in two innings.

The win gives the Eagles a series sweep of Southwestern College, and six wins in a row to move the team's record to 6-2.

WBU will be back in action Thursday, Feb. 15 in Hot Springs, Ark. against Champion Christian.  First pitch is tabbed for 12 PM.
