Eagles Split With Trinity Christian in Doubleheader

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/23/24) - The Williams Baptist baseball team earned a split against Trinity Christian College on Friday after winning game one 3-2 but falling in game two 6-5 at Shell Field.

Game one between the Eagles and the Trolls turned into a pitcher's duel after both pitchers settled in after a rough start to the game for both sides.

Cody Jones gave the WBU the lead in the first inning when he brought in Gavin Mink on an RBI single and then Jones later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 2-0.

TCC struck back in the second inning with an RBI single and an RBI groundout to tie the game at 2-2 and it would remain tied until the bottom of the eighth inning.

Logan Strutz gave way to Gunnar Bettenhausen to start the inning and Bettenhausen immediately ran into trouble when he surrendered a leadoff double to Lawson Aaaron to put the winning run in scoring position.

After an international walk, Nick Jones beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases for Skylar Morrison who drew a walk to bring in the winning run for the Eagles.

On the mound, Noah Willingham turned in an outstanding performance by giving up just two runs on seven hits and striking out five. Jolby Jones took over in the top of the eighth inning and struck out two in his one inning of work to pick up his first win of the season.

In game two, Williams jumped out to a 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning after Aaron and Jacob Watkins each brought in runs on RBI ground outs. Nick Jones punctuated the inning with a monster home run to left centerfield to give the Eagles a three run advantage.

Trinity Christian answered back in the third inning however when they scored six runs on seven hits and one WBU error. The rally began with a home run to left field and continued with two more blasts and an RBI single in the inning.

WBU chipped away the 6-3 deficit over the next innings when Alex Orman doubled in a run in the fourth and Gavin Mink added a solo shot in the fifth to get within 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, had the winning run on base after Aaron and Watkins each reached in back-to-back plate appearances, but the rally fell short as the Trolls slammed the door on a comeback.

Williams will continue its series on Saturday with a doubleheader set to begin at 11 a.m. at Shell Field.
