Eagles' Offensive Explosion Clinches Four Game Sweep of Panthers

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/2/24) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team clinched a four game sweep of Philander-Smith with two wins in a Saturday doubleheader by the final scores of 9-1 and 13-5.

WBU took a 3-1 lead in game one courtesy of a three-run home run from Lawson Aaron in the bottom of the second inning.  The Eagles went on to add six runs in the bottom of the third to go up 9-1, including a Jacob Watkins solo homer and a 2-run single from Gavin Mink.

Philander-Smith's lone run of game one came in the first inning with Sam Lucas III tagging up on a foul fly out to the first baseman.

After giving up that run, starting pitcher Parker Jeffries locked down the Panthers offense, giving up only one hit across the final six innings of a complete game.  With the win, Jeffries ties the WBU school record for career wins with 14.

The Eagles got off to a hot start in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a 2-RBI double from Luis Febres.

WBU went on to plate seven more runs in the bottom of the second inning, including two more RBIs from Gavin Mink, bringing his weekend total to 10.

After a 2-run homer from PSU's Juan Zorola in the top of the fourth cut the Eagles lead to seven, Skylar Morrison answered with a solo shot of his own to bring the score to 10-2.

The Eagles scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to singles from Jacob Watkins, Nick Jones, and Luis Febres.  Philander-Smith added two more runs to bring the score to 13-5, but the Eagles would end the game there, sweeping the weekend.

The Eagles are scheduled to take next weekend off before beginning conference play at home against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Friday, March 15.  First pitch is slated for noon at Shell Field.
