Eagles Make History in Road Sweep of Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, Miss. (3/7/24) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team took its first wins over an NCAA Division I opponent since the 2001 season in a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Thursday night by the final scores of 12-3 and 7-3.

WBU recorded a total of 26 hits across the doubleheader with Lawson Aaron leading the offensive onslaught, going 4-for-7 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

Parker Jeffries turned in a gutsy performance on the mound to clinch the game one win for WBU.  Jeffries went 8.2 innings while striking out eight in a performance that clinched him the WBU record for wins in a career.

The Eagles set the tone early in game one with Nick Jones blasting a 2-run homer over the left field fence to give WBU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Jacob Watkins added two more runs of his own with a 2-RBI single to push the Eagles lead to four.

After the Delta Devils found two runs to cut the lead to 4-2, WBU put up four runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-2 lead.

The Eagles added one in the sixth, two in the eighth, and one more in the ninth to take a 12-3 win in game one.

Williams Baptist responded quickly to falling down early in game two by plating two runs in the top of the second inning.

The Eagles took a 3-2 in the top of the fourth with Lawson Aaron scoring on a passed ball. After Mississippi Valley State tied the ballgame again in the bottom of the fifth, Gavin Mink put the Eagles back on top for good with an RBI double to center field.

Lawson Aaron added the exclamation point to the win with a three-run single in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead.

Noah Willingham earned the win in game two, throwing 6.0 innings and fanning nine Delta Devil hitters.  Cooper Thomas pitched a six out save to clinch the sweep.

WBU returns to action next weekend with the first conference series of the season at home against UHSP.  The teams will face off in a doubleheader on Friday, March 15.  First pitch of game one is tabbed for 12 PM at Shell Field.
