Eagles Fall in Conference Opening Slugfest

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/15/24) – The WBU baseball team dropped its American Midwest Conference opener to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy by the score of 11-10 in 10 innings.

The Eagles took the lead early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning powered by a two-run single from Tate Isaacs.

UHSP responded with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning to tie the game at three runs a piece.  The Eagles took the lead again in the bottom half of the inning with Jacob Watkins scoring on a groundout.

UHSP took the momentum back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-4 lead over the Eagles.  Tyrell Burnett scored on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to three in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eutectics would add to the lead with a solo shot to move the score to 8-5 in the fifth.

WBU answered with a big inning of its own, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth, punctuated by a Cody Jones sacrifice fly that scored Tyrell Burnett to take a 9-8 lead.

UHSP threw another punch in the top of the sixth inning with a two run double that put the Eutectics on top 10-9.  Drake Gravatt scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to put the two teams in the third deadlock of the day.

Some clutch defensive plays on both sides pushed the contest to the tenth inning, where a lead-off solo shot put the Eutectics on top one more time.  The Eagles failed to respond in the bottom half, ending the game with an 11-10 final in favor of UHSP.

The Eagles will look to bounce back tomorrow with a doubleheader to round out the three-game series against UHSP.  First pitch is slated for 11 am at Shell Field.
