Eagles Take Two From UHSP

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/16/24) - The Williams Baptist baseball team rallied for a pair of American Midwest Conference victories over the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Saturday afternoon at Shell Field.

The Eagles won the first game in a 3-2 walk-off when Gavin Mink delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning and then Skylar Morrison preserved an 11-10 win in game two for his first save of the year by striking out three batters in the top of the ninth to send WBU away with the Saturday sweep.

In game one Williams (17-6, 2-1 AMC) entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 2-1 but quickly tied the game when Cody Jones delivered an RBI single to plate Ryan Collins and tie the game at 2-2.

An error by the Eutectics' center fielder on the play allowed Jones to move into scoring position and Mink drove him in the next at-bat to send the Eagles to a 3-2.

Noah Willingham pitched a gem on the mound for the Eagles and went the distance to earn his second victory of the year. He scattered six hits and gave up just two runs while recording four strikeouts.

In game two Williams Baptist held off a five-run rally from UHSP in the top of the ninth inning when Morrison entered the game to shut the door on the comeback attempt.

The Eutectics entered the frame trailing 11-5 but used a 3-run home run and a 2-run to draw within a run. Morrison entered the game with the 1-run lead and no outs and struck out all three batters he faced for his first save of the season.

The sophomore also went 2-for-3 at the plate and had three RBIs and also stole a base.

The score was tied at 5-5 after the sixth inning, but Williams scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to build an advantage.

Morrison started things off in the seventh with a single to left that scored Jacob Watkins and Nicholas Jones also scored when the left fielder could not field the ball cleanly, allowing him to score from second for a 7-5 lead. Morrison later stole home on a delayed steal to push the lead to 8-5.

In the eighth inning, Jones and Watkins each scored on a wild pitch and Morrison drove in a run with an RBI single to go up 11-5.

Williams returns to action Friday, March 22 for an AMC clash with Columbia in Walnut Ridge. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is set for Noon.
