Eagles Suffer Heartbreaking Doubleheader Loss to Columbia

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/22/24) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Columbia College in a doubleheader on Friday by the final scores of 9-4 and 10-7.

The Eagles managed to strike first in game one, plating Josh Bennett on a single to the pitcher from Gavin Mink.  The Eagles quickly surrendered the lead however, as Columbia found its offensive rhythm to score six in the top of the third.

Columbia added to its lead with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth and a solo shot in the top of the seventh to take a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Nick Jones looked to spark the Eagles offense by cashing in on a three-run blast in the bottom half of the seventh inning.  Jones' home run pushed his career RBI total to 105, a new WBU record, and also tied him for the WBU career home run record with 12.

Despite his efforts, WBU's late surge fell short, dropping game one 9-4.

WBU struck first in game two as well with Tyrell Burnett coming home on an RBI double from Luis Febres.  Columbia answered in the top of the second with a solo home run, and took the lead in the top of the third with another run.

Febres struck again in the bottom of the third with a 2-RBI single off of the pitcher to give Williams a 3-2 lead, but Columbia would once again strike with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.

Down two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Luis Febres cashed in once again with two more RBIs on a single up the middle to tie the ballgame.  Jacob Watkins gave the Eagles the lead right back with a sacrifice fly to left field that drove in Nick Jones, with Drake Gravatt scoring on an error to take a 6-5 lead.

Skylar Morrison added more energy to the dugout with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give WBU a 7-5 lead going into the ninth.

Columbia once again found its offensive groove in the top of the ninth inning, putting up five runs to take a 10-7 lead.  Williams would fail to come back in the bottom half of the inning to drop game two in heartbreaking fashion.

The losses dropped WBU to 17-8 on the year and 2-3 in conference play.  The Eagles will get another shot at Columbia tomorrow, Saturday, March 23 at Shell Field. First pitch is slated for Noon.
