Eagles Complete Series Sweep of Hornets

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (3/31/24) - The Williams Baptist baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Harris-Stowe State with a 17-15 victory on Saturday.

The Eagles scored in every inning but two, but the Hornets seemed to match them step for step throughout the game and held a 12-11 lead after seven innings.

A throwing error in the top of the eighth inning tied the game at 12-12 and Skylar Morrison followed with a 3-run home run to center field to put WBU back on top.

Morrison finished the game with five RBIs and three hits.

Alex Orman drove in another run in the eighth for the Eagles before the Hornets scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to get within 16-14.

Nicholas Jones gave Williams some cushion with a solo home run in the ninth to set the final. Jones went 5-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored on the day.

Gavin Mink also had an impressive day at the plate with four RBIs, three hits and two runs scored, while Tyler Burnett picked up two RBIs on a home run in the fifth inning.

WBU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings thanks to a home run from Jones and an RBI double from Morrison in the first inning. An RBI single by Mink and a 2-run hit from Jones gave the Eagles an early 5-0 cushion.

The Hornets rebounded with five runs in the bottom half of the second and from that point, both sides seemed to answer each other at the plate.

Mink drove in a pair in the third and Morrison added another RBI in the fourth to go up 8-5, but Harris Stowe got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Mink and Jones drove in three more runs in the fifth to build an 11-6 lead, but the Hornets again answered with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to take the first lead at 12-11.

Williams Baptist will host Blue Mountain Christian on Tuesday, April 2 at Shell Field for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for Noon.
