Eagles Break WBU Home Run Record in Midweek Split With Blue Mountain

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (4/2/24) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team set a new team single-season home run record as it split its midweek contest with Blue Mountain Christian by the final scores of 16-11 and 7-9.

Tyrell Burnett answered the call to set the tone early for the Eagles, launching a 2-run homer over the left field fence to tie the game after WBU gave up two runs in the top half of the inning.  Tate Isaacs came through with two more RBIs to give the team its first lead of the day.

The Eagles offense did not slow down after the first inning, putting up another four spot on the board in the second to take an 8-3 lead after two innings.  Blue Mountain did not roll over, though, plating six runs in the third and one more in the fourth to give the Toppers a 10-8 lead.

Tate Isaacs came through again to tie the game on a ground ball in the bottom of the fourth, and Cody Jones shot a double into the left-center field gap to score Morrison and Watkins and give WBU a lead that went on to last.

Lawson Aaron and Gavin Mink provided exclamation points on the high-scoring victory with home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Mink's homer set the all-time record for team home runs in a season at WBU with the 32nd Eagle longball of the year.

Jake Algee came in to shut down Blue Mountain on the mound, notching his first save at WBU by getting the last six outs of the game while only surrendering one run.

Game two started more of the same way, with WBU taking a 3-1 lead after two innings.  Blue Mountain struck with a big inning once again, scoring seven in the top of the third to take a 7-3 lead.

Nick Jones highlighted the offense in game two by going 2-for-2 with two home runs and three RBIs.  Lawson Aaron also launched a homer in the bottom of the fifth for his second of the day.

Despite the WBU pitching staff shutting down BMCU for the rest of the game, the offensive effort fell just short, falling 9-7 in the latter half of the doubleheader.

Williams Baptist will be back to American Midwest Conference action this weekend against Hannibal-LaGrange University.  The three game set will open with a doubleheader on Friday, April 5 with first pitch scheduled for noon.
