Burnett Shines in Eagles Split With Trojans

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Williams Baptist University baseball team split its doubleheader with Hannibal-LaGrange on Friday by the final scores of 3-5 and 10-3.

Tyrell Burnett highlighted the day, collecting five hits including a double and a home run with four RBIs, three walks, and four runs scored.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game one, striking first with Burnett scoring on an error in the bottom of the first.  Lawson Aaron added to the lead with a solo shot in the second to give WBU a 2-0 cushion through two innings.

Hannibal-LaGrange struck back in a big way with a three-run double off the bat of Adam Lange to take a 3-2 lead in the third inning.

The WBU bats went silent after that, only capturing one run on six hits through the final five innings of the contest.

HLGU scored twice more in the sixth to bring its lead to 5-2.  J.D. Burton came around to score from second on a miscommunication on an infield pop fly in the bottom half of the sixth, but the Eagles failed to carry on the momentum, falling 5-3 in game one.

After the Trojans took a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning, WBU came back guns blazing, putting up a four spot in the bottom half of the inning, powered by an RBI double from Burnett and a 2-run homer from Gavin Mink.

Parker Jeffries took control of the game after the second inning, fanning 12 Trojan hitters in his 8.0 innings of work, allowing only two runs.

The Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning when Burnett cashed in a 3-run bomb over the fence in left-center field.  Williams put up another run in the seventh and two more in the bottom of the eighth to take home a 10-3 win against Hannibal-LaGrange.

The wins move WBU to a 23-11 overall record on the season and a 6-5 mark in American Midwest Conference play.

The Eagles look to take the series in Saturday's rubber match at Shell Field.  First pitch is set for 11 AM.
