Aaron, Morrison Lead WBU to Opening Day Sweep

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (1/28/25) – Big home runs from Lawson Aaron and Skylar Morrison lifted the Williams Baptist University baseball team to an opening day doubleheader sweep of Champion Christian on Tuesday by the final scores of 8-7 and 8-2.

Down five runs going into the bottom of the seventh in game one, Connor Brinkley provided a spark with an RBI double to cut the lead to four.  Nicholas Jones followed with an RBI single to left to cut it to three, and Lawson Aaron tied it at seven with a three-run blast over the left field fence.  Skylar Morrison followed with a solo shot to win game one 8-7.  

Aaron went a combined 5-for-8 from the plate with six RBI's across both games of the doubleheader, while Morrison went 3-for-5 with three RBI's.

Parker Jeffries got the start in game one.  The Neelyville, Mo. native went 4.0 innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts.  Jolby Jones picked up the win after throwing two innings of two-run ball.

In game two, Aaron got the offense rolling again with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead.  The Eagles capitalized on some Tiger mistakes in the fourth to extend the lead.  Mari Thomas drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to put the Eagles up eight.

Nash Coczka went 5.0 shutout innings with only three hits allowed.  Cooper Thomas threw a scoreless sixth, and Dawson Cloud and Jacob Eubanks combined to close out the seventh.

WBU moves to 2-0 on the season.  The Eagles will round out the three game set with Champion Christian on Monday, Feb. 3 in Hot Springs, Ark.  First pitch time is currently TBD.
