WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/24/25) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team swept a doubleheader against William Woods by the final scores of 3-1 and 4-3 to begin American Midwest Conference play on Monday afternoon at Shell Field.
Jacob Watkins led the way at the plate in the doubleheader by going 4-for-7 with a home run and three RBI's. Tyrell Burnett followed at 4-for-6 with four singles.
William Woods took a quick lead in the top of the first after an RBI single from Nolan Riechers. WBU responded in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Watkins to tie the game.
Connor Brinkley scored on an error in the fourth to give WBU the lead, and Luke Bullins scored on an error to add an insurance run.
Parker Jeffries did not allow any more runs past the first inning. He threw a complete game with six strikeouts to take his third win of the season.
Jacob Watkins put WBU on top in game two with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Woods cut the lead to one with a run on a wild pitch in the fourth, but Williams added two more on an error in the bottom half of the frame to go up 4-1.
Woods fought back late with a solo shot from Noah Shepherd in the sixth and a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh cut the lead to one. With the tying run 90 feet away with two outs, Jacob Eubanks slammed the door by inducing a groundout from the final batter to secure the 4-3 win.
Nash Koczka got the start in game two. He threw 5.1 innings with only one hit and nine strikeouts to earn the win. Cooper Thomas threw 1.1 innings with an earned run, and Eubanks earned his first save of the season after retiring the game's final batter.
WBU moves to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play this season. 9-1 is the best start through 10 games in program history.
The Eagles return to the diamond for the final two of their four game set with William Woods on Tuesday, Feb. 25. First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is set for 11 a.m. from Shell Field.
