Eagles Swing Big in Doubleheader Sweep of Sabercats
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/26/25) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team swept Maranatha Baptist in a midweek doubleheader by the final scores of 11-1 and 11-3 at Shell Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Tyrell Burnett led the way on offense for the Eagles going 1-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Luke Bullins also drove in two runs.
Bullins got the Eagles on the board first in the bottom of the second with an RBI on a fielder's choice. Tyrell Burnett broke the game open an inning later with a bases-clearing three-run double, and Connor Brinkley brought Burnett home on a single later in the frame to put WBU up 5-0.
Williams plated two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to go up 11-0. MBU got a run back in the seventh on a fielder's choice, but the Eagles were able to close it out for the win.
Jolby Jones got the win in the bullpen game for WBU. He tossed two scoreless innings with only one hit and four strikeouts. Alex Orman, Noah Burns, Coleton Payton, Jacob Eubanks, and Mari Thomas each threw an inning in the contest.
Mari Thomas went 1-for-3 with three RBI's at the plate in game two to lead Williams. Brett Cyprien also drove in two runs.
The Sabercats took an early lead in the latter half of the doubleheader. Emerson Pease doubled to bring home the game's first run, then a two-run double from Don Wheeler put MBU up 3-0 in the top of the first.
WBU responded quickly in the bottom of the first when Mari Thomas cut the lead to one with a two-run double. Connor Brinkley brought Thomas home on a sacrifice fly to tie the game after one.
Cyprien gave the Eagles the lead with a two-run single through the right side in the bottom of the second. Tyrell Burnett scored on a wild pitch to put WBU up 6-3 through two.
The score remained 6-3 until WBU put up five in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Eagles drew four bases-loaded walks in the frame to march around the bases and take an 11-3 lead.
Kaden Martin got the win in another bullpen game for the Eagles. He threw the first two innings, allowing three runs. Brevin Carlisle tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, while Fowler Maddox, Gaige Zaffarano, and Mason Andrews each threw one inning.
The wins move WBU to 20-10 overall on the season. The Eagles will return to action on Friday, Mar. 28 for the first two of a four-game set with No. 23 Missouri Baptist. First pitch against the Spartans is set for noon from St. Louis, Mo.
