Late Run Propels Eagles Over Hornets

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (2/8/24) – Four Eagles scored in double figures Thursday night as the Williams Baptist University men's basketball team took down Harris-Stowe State 73-63 in a conference matchup.

TJ Clardy and Ben Keton tied for the team lead in points with 15 a piece in the contest.  Ashton Young followed with 13, and DJ Townsend chipped in 10 more in the victory.  Young also led the team in rebounds with 11 for his first double-double as an Eagle.  Rico Quinton put in work on the defensive side of the ball, emphatically swatting away three shots in the game.

As a team the Eagles shot 42.4 percent from the floor, and 30.8 percent from three-point range.  WBU out-rebounded Harris-Stowe 34-30, and converted 14 points off turnovers.  The Eagles bench stepped up as well, chipping in 33 points.

After going into halftime up one point, Williams relented a 7-0 run to Harris-Stowe to fall behind 37-31.  The Hornets held the lead until DJ Townsend buried a three-pointer with 11:22 left in the second half to take a 45-44 lead.

Harris-Stowe answered with a Bennie Amos layup and a free throw to take back a 47-45 lead, but TJ Clardy drew the contact on a layup to give the Eagles another lead.  Bennie Amos knocked down another jump shot, but the Eagles took the lead for good on a Ben Keton Layup.

Keton and Young combined for three straight three-pointers on a 14-2 run punctuated by two Cory Sanders free throws to seal the road win.

The win snaps a three game skid for the Eagles, moving the team's record up to 11-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10 in the second half of a men's and women's doubleheader against Hannibal-Lagrange University.  Tip-off is set for 3 PM in Hannibal, Mo.
