Eagles Fall Short in AMC Finals Match

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (11/10/23) -The Williams Baptist University men's soccer team lost to Columbia College by the score of 2-1 in the American Midwest Conference Tournament Championship match.

The match started off quickly in the favor of Columbia as they put pressure on the Eagles defense. A goal seemed to have slipped through in the 31st minute in favor of the Cougars, but it was wiped away due to an offsides call.  The Eagles would turn this into momentum, tallying the first goal of the game off the foot of Jacobo Obradors, with an assist from Alfonso Madrigal in the 36th minute.

The momentum would start to swing back in Columbia's favor when Jacob Doehman was ejected from the match following a red card.  The Eagles would go into the locker room up 1-0, but Columbia found the equalizer in the 50th minute of the match from Luke Hynes.

Columbia would find its second score of the match shortly after in the 67th minute courtesy of Carter Redford.

The Eagles would remain competitive throughout the match, as the Eagles put up four shots on goal in the second half, all saved by Columbia goalkeeper Alejandro Molto Munoz.

A late red card issued to Lucas Belinello would seal the game in favor of Columbia.  The Eagles would continue to fight hard, but after two headers from Jacobo Obradors and Joao Costa were turned away, the game would end in favor of Columbia.

This marks the second year in a row the Eagles have fallen to Columbia in the AMC Tournament Championship match.

The Eagles will await word on an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The selection show will take place on the NAIA YouTube channel on Monday, Nov. 13 at Noon.  The first and second rounds of the NAIA national tournament will take place Nov. 16-18 at campus sites.
