Eagles Drop Season Opener to Benedictine

ATCHISON, Kan. (8/23/24) – The Williams Baptist University men's soccer team opened its regular season slate with a 3-0 loss to Benedictine (KS) on Friday evening.

The match was a defensive battle in the early going, with neither side finding a shot until the 15th minute.

On only the second shot attempt of the match, Benedictine found its first score in the 17th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

Jacobo Obradors looked to tie the match right back in the 26th, but his shot was saved by the Ravens goalkeeper. 

The second half started much like the first.  Hugo Gil looked for the equalizer in the 61st minute, but his shot was blocked.

Benedictine pushed its lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 64th minute of the match.

WBU fell behind 3-0 after an own-goal and could not mount a comeback, dropping to 0-1 on the season.

Rodrigo Pina played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles, grabbing two saves.

Next, the Eagles will head to Texarkana, Tex. to take on Texas A&M - Texarkana at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27.
