WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (11/6/24) – The Williams Baptist men's soccer team took a 3-0 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange in the quarterfinal round of the American Midwest Conference tournament on Wednesday to secure a spot in the semifinal round.
The Eagles out-shot the Trojans 19-4 on the day, with eight on goal. Eagles keeper Rodrigo Pina converted his only save opportunity for his 13th clean sheet of the year.
The match started as a defensive battle with only three shots between both teams in the first 35 minutes. WBU was able to break through the tough Trojan defense with a score from Pedro Paulo assisted by Jacobo Obradors in the 39th minute. Shortly after, Lucas Belinello added an insurance score in the 43rd with an assist from Adrian Briceno to give Williams a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The Eagles continued to work hard defensively, allowing only two shots in the second half and none on goal. The final tally for Williams came from Hugo Gil in the 85th minute with an assist by Arthur Ferreira to seal up the 3-0 Eagle victory.
The win puts the Eagles at an 11-3-4 overall mark on the season. WBU will move on to face the winner of No. 2 Missouri Baptist and No. 7 Central Baptist in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 9. The match will be hosted by the higher seed.
