Eagles Fall to No. 8 Bellevue in NAIA Tournament Second Round in Penalty Shootout

OMAHA, Neb. (11/23/24) – The Williams Baptist University men's soccer team fell 5-4 after a penalty shootout to No. 8 Bellevue in the second round of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament.

WBU played 110 scoreless minutes with the eighth-seeded Bruins for the Eagles 14th shutout on the season.

Williams out-shot Bellevue 12-8 with five shots on goal, with three of those shots on target coming from Hugo Gil.

WBU threatened to take the lead early with a shot from Gil in the 10th minute that was saved by a Bruins defender to keep the score level.

Bellevue put up a shot on goal of its own in the 37th minute but Eagles keeper Rodrigo Pina made the save to send the game scoreless into halftime.

Matheus Farias put up the Eagles only shot on target of the second half in the 68th minute, which was saved by the Bruins keeper.

In the second overtime, Bellevue looked to have scored the game-winner, but time expired right before the score to send the match to a shootout.

The Eagles converted the first four opportunities of the shootout to take a 4-3 lead, but the Bruins keeper stepped up to stop the final two and Bellevue took the shootout win 5-4.

Williams ends the season with a 12-3-6 record, the second most wins in program history.
