Lady Eagles Drop A Pair of Close Ones to Christian Brothers

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - The Williams softball team dropped a pair of close games to DII opponent Christian Brothers University on Tuesday afternoon.

Game One

The game was pretty quiet from both teams in the first three innings of the game. The Buccaneers opened up the scoring with a run in the fourth, but the Lady Eagles tied the game up with a run in the fifth when Alyssa Cordell hit a RBI double down the left field line. CBU retook the lead when they plated a pair in the sixth inning. Williams got a run back in the home half of the sixth when Karsen Overshine hit a RBI single to centerfield, but that was all. 

Angel Gillette got the start and pitched 5.1 innings. She allowed three runs off six hits, walked three and struck out seven. Morgan Garner pitched 1.2 innings of relief and allowed one hit while striking out one. 

Game Two

The second game of the day needed extra innings to be decided. CBU took the lead with a run in the second inning and then added a run in the fourth inning. Cordell hit a 3 run bomb over the right field wall in the fourth inning to give Williams its first lead of the day. The Lady Eagles added to the lead with a run in the sixth when Kaylee Wolfe reached on an error that allowed Naomi Crowley to score. CBU tied the game in the seventh inning with a two-run homerun. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning with Rylee Boshell getting the RBI groundout for Williams. CBU plated three runs in the ninth to take an 8-5 lead. The Lady Eagles plated a run in the bottom of the ninth when Shelby Jones scored on a wild pitch. Overshine was then walked and Kaydra Cole was hit by a pitch to bring the winning run to the plate for Williams. Cordell hit an massive ball to centerfield and had the walkoff homerun robbed by the centerfielder. 

Tori Kierbach got the start and pitched 6.0 innings. She allowed two runs off five hits, walked one and struck out one. Maddie Wallace pitched 2.0 innings of relief and allowed four runs off four hits and struck out two. Gillette pitched 1.0 inning of relief and allowed two runs off one hit, walked one and struck out one.

The Lady Eagles host Ecclesia College at the WBU Softball field on Thursday, March 16 for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
