Lady Eagles Drop Pair of Close Games To Owls

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - The Williams softball team dropped a pair of close games to the William Woods Owls on Saturday, falling in game one 8-6 and 11-7 in game two. With the losses, the Lady Eagles are now 15-20 overall and 6-5 in conference play.

Game One

The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Lady Eagles retook the lead with three runs in the second as Alyssa Cordell hit a RBI double, then scored on a passed ball, and Kaylee Wolfe hit a RBI sac fly. The Owls tied it with a run in the third, but the Lady Eagles responded with two runs to retake the lead as Kaydra Cole reached on an error that allowed Megan Weis to score and then Cordell hit a RBI double. The Owls quickly retook the lead themselves with three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to lead 7-5. The Lady Eagles made it a 7-6 game in the fifth when Kennedy Johnson hit a RBI single. The Owls made it a two-run game with a run in the sixth. The Lady Eagles had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, but they were unable to bring a run home. 

Morgan Garner got the start in the circle and pitched 1.2 innings. She allowed two runs off two hits, walked two and struck out one. Angel Gillette pitched 4.1 innings of relief and allowed six runs off six hits, walked three and struck out four. Cassidi Doyle pitched 1.0 inning of relief and allowed one hit while striking out one. 

Game Two

In the second game it was the Lady Eagles who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Cole reached on an error that allowed Shelby Jones to score and Cordell hit a RBI groundout. The Owls responded with five runs in the second and one run in the third to take a 6-2 lead. The Lady Eagles made it 6-4 in the third when Cordell and Johnson hit back-to-back RBI doubles. The Owls plated four runs in the fifth to make it a 10-4 game. Williams made it 10-6 in the sixth when Maddi Altenthal hit a 2-run bomb to left field. The Owls plated a run in the seventh, which the Lady Eagles got back in the home half of the inning when Cordell hit a RBI double, but unfortunately that was all for the Lady Eagles. 

Doyle got the start in the circle and pitched 3.0 innings. She allowed six runs off five hits, walked three and struck out three. Tori Kierbach pitched 3.0 innings of relief and allowed four runs off seven hits, walked one and struck out five. Maddie Wallace pitched 1.0 inning of relief and allowed one run off two hits, walked one and struck out one.

The Lady Eagles continue AMC play on Tuesday, April 11 as they travel to Batesville, Ark. for a doubleheader against Lyon College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
