Lady Eagles Fall to CBC on Senior Day

The Williams Baptist University softball team dropped a pair of close matchups against Central Baptist College on Saturday afternoon 3-2 and 6-5 as the squad wrapped American Midwest Conference play and celebrated senior day at the WBU Softball field.

Both games were tight contests with game two going into extra innings, but ultimately the Mustangs bested the Eagles with a pair of timely home runs in each game that provided the edge needed to propel CBC to victory.

In the second game of the day the Lady Eagles took an early 2-1 lead after the first inning when Megan Weis and Shelby Jones each scored on back-to-back errors by CBC.

The Mustangs took the lead back with the three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Williams answered with Kaylee Wolfe sacrifice fly and some key base running by Paige Thomas to score on an error to tie the game at 4-4.

The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when CBC's Allison Wagle sent a two-run home run over the wall in left.

WBU battled back in the bottom half of the inning, and cut the deficit to just a run than to a single by Thomas that plated Victoria Corker. The Lady Eagles forced the issue further when a sac bunt moved the tying run to third, but they could do no more damage.

In game one WBU fell behind in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Lauren Anderson, but once again managed to cut the CBC lead in half in the bottom half of the frame.

Alyssa Cordell singled to center to score Weiss and move the tying run into scoring position, but the Lady Eagles failed to push across the game's tying run.

After the game Williams honored seniors Shayanne Foley, Jenna James, Shelby Jones, Alyssa Cordell and Angel Gillette for all their contributions to the Lady Eagles softball team.

Next up for the Eagles is a non-conference tilt with Mississippi University for Women in Walnut Ridge on April 28 at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader matchup on April 29.
