Eagles Softball Falls to MUW After Seventh-Inning Rally

The Williams Baptist University Lady Eagles softball team lost to the Mississippi University for Women 8-5 Friday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Field.

WBU led 5-4 going into the seventh inning after Morgan Weis drove in a run with an RBI single to give the Eagles their first lead of the day.

The Owls responded in the top half of the seventh, however, with a pair of RBI singles and an RBI single to push their advantage to three runs at 8-5.

Maiya Joe tied the game with a single to center, and Makalyn Cowley followed with a two-RBI double to left that pushed the lead to 7-5. Jaelynn Palmer rounded out the innings for the Owls with a single to left to make it an 8-5 game.

The Eagles managed to get a runner on in the bottom half of the inning but could do more as MUW took the opening game of the series.

WBU erased a 4-0 deficit with a four-run third inning of its own. Karsen Overshine provided the big hit of the inning with a single to center field that eventually brought in three runs. The single plated two RBIs, but the ball was misplayed by the Owls centerfielder and allowed a third run to come around to score on the error to get Williams within 4-3.

Overshine later scored on a Kayrdra Cole single to tie the game at 4-4.

Morgan Garner took the loss despite a strong effort in relief for the Eagles. She threw 4.1 innings of relief of Angel Gillette and did not give up a run until the seventh inning.

The Eagles and Owls will conclude their series Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader. The start time for the first game has been pushed back to 1 p.m. due to the threat of rain moving into the area in the morning.
