Lady Eagles Fall to Cottey in AMC Tournament

The Williams softball team had its season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-1 loss to Cottey College in the elimination bracket of the American Midwest Conference Championship tournament.

The Lady Eagles (19-31) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Alyssa Cordell reached on an error that allowed Shelby Jones to score from third.

It was one one of four errors on the day by the Comets, but the only one that WBU could make them pay for as Cottey worked around each miscue. 

Cottey did most of its damage in the bottom of the first and second innings when it combined for five runs over the two frames. Lauren Johnson and Aryana Palencia each drove in runs in the first inning with RBI singles, while Virginia Nordin drew a bases loaded walk.

In the second inning, Palencia reached on an error by the Lady Eagles, which allowed two runs to score and gave the Comets a 5-1 advantage.

WBU struggled to string together hits on the day and collected just two as a team. 

Cottey put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with four more runs in the to implement the run-rule and set the final.
