Garner's Gem Secures Doubleheader Split With Ouachita Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (2/20/24) – The Williams Baptist University softball team walked away with a split in a doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist by the final scores of 3-4 and 4-1.

Williams came out with a renewed energy in game two, immediately taking a 1-0 lead with Maddi Altenthal scoring on a throwing error.  Kennedy Johnson extended the lead with a 2-run shot to right field for her third homer of the season.  Rylee Boshell scored on a groundout to add one more run in the inning to give the Lady Eagles a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Morgan Garner shut the Tigers down on the defensive side of the ball, allowing only one earned run and three hits in her seven innings of work.  Garner also struck out five in the contest to give the Lady Eagles a 4-1 win in game two.

WBU struck first in game one with a Madyson Shoebottom RBI-double to plate Natalia Watkins in the top of the first.  Paige Thomas followed with a single up the middle to drive in Shoebottom to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead.

After a response from Ouachita Baptist in the bottom of the first that cut the lead to 2-1, Megan Petty scored on a throwing error to push the Williams lead to 3-1.

After adding a second run in the bottom of the second, the Tigers were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning.

Despite a diving effort from second baseman Bailey Crump, Ouachita Baptist scored the tying run on an infield single.  The winning run came around on another infield single from Remington Adams to hand the Eagles a heartbreaking loss in game one.

The Lady Eagles take the field again on Saturday, Feb. 24 at home for a doubleheader against St. Mary-Woods College.  First pitch is tabbed for 1 P.M. at the WBU Softball Field.
