Lady Eagles Win Fifth Straight With Sweep of Lane College

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/27/24) – Powered by some big pitching and clutch offense, the Williams Baptist University softball team swept Lane College in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader by the final scores of 9-0 and 4-3.

Emberlin Caldwell dominated in the circle in game one, throwing the second complete game shutout of her career. Caldwell allowed only three hits across five innings of work, while striking out six.

Madyson Shoebottom led the offensive charge in game one, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.  Reigning AMC Player of the Week Kennedy Johnson also pitched in with two doubles of her own in two at-bats.

The Lady Eagles took the lead in the first inning courtesy of a Madyson Shoebottom RBI-single to left field.  Kaylee Wolfe drove in Shoebottom on a sac fly to add another run, and a Rylee Boshell RBI-single gave WBU a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

WBU added three more runs in the third, and three more in the fourth, aided by two RBIs from Krista Jones to take a 9-0 lead after four.  Caldwell was able to close out the game for a mercy rule victory in five innings in game one of the doubleheader.

The Lady Eagles slowed down on offense in game two. Morgan Garner held the Dragons scoreless through the first six innings of the ball game, while WBU took the lead in the bottom of the third with Megan Petty scoring on an error.

Lane found its way on the board with a 2-run triple from Aspyn Beattie in the top of the seventh inning, then added one more run on a Lady Eagles error to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Eagles came alive offensively.  Petty drove in Maddi Altenthal on a well-executed squeeze play to cut the lead to one.  Shoebottom walloped an RBI-double down the right field line to tie the game at three runs a piece, and set the table for Kennedy Johnson.

With the winning run on third base, Johnson turned on an intentional ball to drive in the runner and secure the doubleheader sweep for the Lady Eagles.

The win is the fifth straight for the Lady Eagles, bumping the team to 10-2 overall on the season.  Williams is off to its best start since 2015.

WBU softball will look to continue its momentum this weekend in the Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala.  The tournament begins on Friday, March 1 with the Lady Eagles taking on Brenau at 9 A.M., and Houston-Victoria at 11:15 A.M.
