Caldwell Sets WBU Strikeout Record in Sweep of Haskell

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (3/19/24) - Freshman Emberlin Caldwell broke the Williams Baptist single-game mark for strikeouts by a pitcher with 17 as she helped the Lady Eagles to a sweep over Haskell Indian Nations with a 7-1 victory in game one and a 6-1 win in game two.

Caldwell was outstanding in her performance in game one as she allowed just one run on two hits to go along with the 17 strikeouts. She struck out the side twice in the game and also recorded all three outs via strikeout three times, sandwiching a single around the first strikeout in the fourth inning.

After five innings she had totaled 12 strikeouts and was two behind the mark of 14 set by Karisa Hendrix on four separate occasions during her WBU career. She tied the mark with two strikeouts in the sixth and then struck out the side swinging in the seventh to set the new mark at 17.

Kaylee Wolfe gave the Lady Eagles the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a bases-loaded triple to go up 3-1 and Maddi Alenthal drove in Wolfe on an infield single.

Madison Knight singled in a run in the fifth inning to push the advantage to 5-1 and Krista Jones and Alenthal each drove in runs when they were hit-by-pitches with the bases loaded to drive in runs to push the score to 7-1.

Alenthal finished the game with two RBIs, while Knight, Madyson Shoebottom, and Natalia Watkins had two hits each.

In game two, Williams kept the bats hot and posted two runs in the second inning thanks to Victoria Corker and Watkins who each drove in runs in the inning.

Shoebottom added a mammoth solo blast in the fifth inning to go up 3-0 and Hannah Stallings drove in Wolfe later in the frame to push the advantage to 4-0.

The Lady Eagles capped the scoring in the sixth with an RBI groundout from Naomi Boyer, followed by an RBI double from Kennedy Johnson.

Inside the circle, Morgan Garner pitched six strong innings and did not give up a run on just four hits, while striking out four.

Williams Baptist returns to take on Bethel on Saturday, March 23 for a non-conference doubleheader at the WBU Softball Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
