Lady Eagles Sweep Cottey for Undefeated Weekend

NEVADA, Mo. (4/20/24) - The Williams Baptist University softball team swept Cottey College 3-2 and 11-1 in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The sweep keeps the Lady Eagles (31-12, 14-2) tied atop the AMC standings with two conference games left in the season. Missouri Baptist closed out its conference slate on Saturday and finished with a league stanza of 16-2.

WBU will travel to Central Baptist College on Tuesday, April 23 for its final league games of the year. A sweep of the Mustangs would result in Williams finishing as co-conference champions with the Spartans.

In game one on Saturday the Comets held a 2-0 lead for most of the contest until the top of the sixth innings when Williams scored three runs to take the lead.

WBU loaded the bases with no outs, but a pair of strikeouts threatened to end the rally until Kaylee Wolfee singled through the left side to plate Victoria Corker.

Megan Petty then reached on an error by the Comets shortstop that also allowed Maddi Altenthal and Naomi Boyer to score the tying and go-ahead runs.

Cottey threatened in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but Morgan Garner shut down the attempt in both innings and finished with her second complete game of the weekend to secure the game-one victory.

In game two, the Lady Eagles used a 9-run third inning to break the game open and then cruised to a five-inning run-rule victory to secure a perfect 4-0 weekend.

Kennedy Johnson, who finished the game 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs, got things going in the third with a 2-run single to give WBU a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish. Laila Byas, who also drove in a run in the second inning, followed with an RBI single.

Wolfe then drove in a run with a single to right center and Byas later scored on a wild pitch to push the advantage to 6-1.

Madyson Shoebottom put an exclamation mark on the inning with a double down the left field line that brought in three runs and then later scored on a wild pitch to make a 10-1 lead for WBU.

Johnson put a cap on the day with a home run in the fourth inning to set the final at 11-1.

Emberlin Caldwell struck out five in five innings and gave up just one run on two hits.

The Lady Eagles will travel to Conway, Ark., to take on CBC on Tuesday, April 23 in their AMC regular-season finale. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
