Lady Eagles Drop Opener; Rebound Against Stephens in AMC Tournament

COLUMBIA, Ark. (4/30/24) - The Williams Baptist softball team lost its opening round American Midwest Conference Tournament matchup to No. 6 William Woods 4-1 in 11 innings, but rebounded to defeat No. 7 Stephens 3-2 in the second game of the day to advance to the second day of the tournament.

The Lady Eagles will face the loser of the Missouri Baptist and Cottey contest tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Against William Woods the Lady Eagles fell behind when Brooke Lopez hit a solo home in the second inning. From that point WBU failed to put together a consistent attack at the plate.

WBU threatened in the fifth when Maddi Altenthal reached and then stole second and third, but was left stranded to end the inning.

AMC Player of the Year Madyson Shoebottom provided heroics in the bottom of the seventh when she led off the frame with a solo blast to tie the game at 1-1 and the Lady Eagles looked to be in business when Altenthal again reached third but the inning again ended when she was left stranded.

WBU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but again failed to produce a run and then left a runner stranded on second in the ninth. In all the Lady Eagles left 10 base runners on the base paths.

William Woods struck in the top of the 11th with a two-run single and a RBI single to go up 4-1. WBU could not rally in the bottom half of the inning to drop game one of the tournament and fall into the elimination bracket.

AMC Freshman of the Year Emberlin Caldwell was fantastic inside the circle for Williams, going 10 innings and striking out 12.

In the second game of the day, Stephens took an early 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but Shoebottom tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to plate Megan Petty.

Madison Knight later followed with an RBI groundout to bring in Natalia Watkins and Paige Thomas reached on an error which allowed Shoebottom to score to give Williams a 3-1 advantage.

Stephens cut the lead in half in the third when the Stars added a run to get within 3-2, but Morgan Garner shut down any more chances of a Stephens as she went the distance and added six strikeouts in the performance.
