Lady Eagles Sweep Day Four of AMC Tournament, Advance to Championship Round

COLUMBIA, Mo. (5/3/23) – The Williams Baptist University softball team won two games on day four of the American Midwest Conference tournament against William Woods and Central Baptist by the final scores of 7-0 and 5-3 to move on to the championship round.

On Thursday, Madyson Shoebottom was able to get the Lady Eagles on the board with a two-run double against William Woods before a storm moved in to suspend the contest in the bottom of the first.

After the game resumed at 10 a.m. on Friday, Emberlin Caldwell took back to the circle to finish what she started, tossing a two-hit shutout to send the Eagles past the Owls.

Madison Knight added three RBIs in the bottom of the fourth with a bases clearing double to give Caldwell some breathing room.

In the sixth, Natalia Watkins pushed the advantage to 6-0 with an RBI double to left center, and Knight struck again with a sacrifice bunt to drive in Naomi Boyer.

The Lady Eagles moved on to face No. 2 Central Baptist in an elimination game with a bid to the championship round on the line.

Central Baptist took the first lead of the ballgame with a run in the bottom of the first, but a Kennedy Johnson RBI double tied the affair at one in the second.

After a shutdown inning from starter Morgan Garner, WBU took its first lead of the game in the top of the third on a throwing error by the Mustang shortstop.

CBC stormed back to take the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but WBU took advantage of another CBC error in the fourth to tie the game at three.

Later on in the inning, Natalia Watkins drove in Kaylee Wolfe and Victoria Corker to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead.

Emberlin Caldwell took the circle in the fifth and shut the Mustangs down for three innings, allowing only two hits for her first save of her collegiate career.

The Lady Eagles will move on to the championship round against Cottey.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. from Battle High School in Columbia, Mo., with an if necessary game slated for Noon.
