WBU Comes Up Short Against Cottey in AMC Championship Game

COLUMBIA, Mo. (5/4/24) - The Williams Baptist softball team fell to Cottey College 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the American Midwest Conference Softball Tournament Championship game at Antimi Softball Complex on the campus of Columbia College.

The Lady Eagles needed to defeat the Comets twice on Saturday to claim the AMC Tournament title and nearly pulled off the feat in the first game of the day in a tightly contested matchup.

Cottey took a 1-0 lead in the first inning by bringing in a run on a bunt single, but the Lady Eagles rallied in the third with a solo home run off the bat of Kennedy Johnson to tie the game.

Maddi Altenthal put WBU out in front at 2-1 in the fourth inning with a single to right field to bring in Madyson Shoebottom.

Emberin Caldwell was in control inside the circle for most of the game and gave up just three runs, two earned, on six hits with one strikeout.

Cottey struck back in the sixth inning when they took advantage of an error to tie the game and then a sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run.

WBU failed to rally in the seventh and Cottey prevailed for the victory.

Williams finished with an overall record of 37-17.
