WBU Fights Hard in Four-Set Loss to Mission
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (10/22/24) – The Williams Baptist University volleyball team battled in a 3-1 loss to American Midwest Conference foe Mission in front of a packed home crowd inside the Southerland-Mabee Center on Tuesday night.
Meadow Jones took the team lead in kills on the night with 12 for a .194 hitting percentage. Jayla Weddington and Alonna Thomas also piled on eight of their own. Jones also put in work in front of the net with five total blocks, and Darcy Broglin denied four Patriot attacks.
Mission got out to a big lead in the first set, taking a 12-6 lead after a Maddie Rue kill. Alonna Thomas sparked a 4-0 Eagle run to bring the squad within three. The Eagles battled back to tie the set at 19 all after a Jayla Weddington kill, and took a 20-19 lead with an ace from Faith Raymond. The Eagles took the final three points on two MU attack errors and a Jones kill to take the first set 26-24.
Williams struggled to find an offensive footing in the second set, relinquishing a 9-4 run to fall behind 18-9. Mission took the second set 25-15 to even the match.
The Eagles had a hot start in the third, taking a quick 8-4 lead punctuated by a Darcy Broglin kill to force a Patriot timeout. The Patriots crawled back with a 5-0 run to tie it at nine, then took a 13-12 on a kill from Street. An MU attack error brought WBU within one, but Mission was able to close out the set 25-23.
Mission took a 19-13 lead late in the fourth set on a kill from Allison Czachowski. Despite the large gap, Williams began to crawl back. After going down 23-17 on an attack error out of the timeout, the Eagles strung together an 8-1 run to take the 25-24 lead late. However, Mission took the final three points to close out the set 27-25, and take the match 3-1.
The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 5-17 overall on the season and 1-5 in AMC play. Williams will return to the court on Thursday, Oct. 24 against Central Baptist. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start time in the Southerland-Mabee Center on the campus of Williams Baptist University.
